JEFFERSON COUNTY- West Carthage Village Mayor Scott Burto believes a local motel is set to house asylum seekers, but is expressing concerns regarding potential legal issues and that his village is not yet ready to handle the situation.

This is according to the latest from WWNY-TV.

Recently, Mayor Burto wrote a letter to the Jefferson County Board of Legislators, citing various reasons backing up his worries over receiving busloads of migrants.

In order, Mayor Burto cites lacking staff and personnel in the DSS, a lack of resources from local medical and public health, a teacher shortage and an already ongoing homeless issue locally.

As of this report, West Carthage has reportedly filed a complaint in the State Supreme Court against Pleasant Night Inn, owned by Paresh Patel.

Patel told reporters that a company, with aims of assisting the state in placing migrants, reached out and asked questions about the hotel, including how many rooms are available.

Patel said they want to proceed with the village the legal way, but Mayor Burto says he believes it’s already a done deal.

In response, the village is seeking for court action, where a restraining order would be enacted to prohibit the inn from violating village code, which prohibits hotels and motels from housing people for longer than 30-days.
