Otter Lake Brush Fire May 2023

ONEIDA COUNTY- Winds, dry ground and low humidity encouraged what started out as a grass fire to spread into a “large brush fire” Tuesday morning in Northern Oneida County, according to a local fire department.

Members from Woodgate, Forestport and Otter Lake were all called out to reports of a brush fire along State Route 28, town of Forestport.

Woodgate Fire Department officials said in a statement that the fire originally started as a grass fire, but took off amid conditions that are hazardous for such fires to spark.

Fortunately, a fast response from firefighters and nearby citizens prevented the flames from spreading beyond three acres.

"We are very grateful for all of the help from the neighboring departments, civilians and other support agencies that help bring this fire under control," Woodgate Fiore Department said in a statement.

"This could have been devastating large-scale fire if it wasn't for the quick actions of all persons involved."

Members from New York State Fire and the State Police provided assistance.

No injuries were reported and fire officials reported ground vegetation and trees that were damaged.
