Ervin J. Sullivan
BOONVILLE - Ervin J. Sullivan, 95,passed away December 23, 2023, at Sunset Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
He was born on November 5, 1928 near the Fish Creek Church in the town of West Turin, a son of William and Agnes Hoffert Sullivan. He was united in marriage with Margaret O’Brien on July 15,1950 at St. Joseph’s Church in Boonville; a marriage that lasted over 51 years until Margaret passed away on September 17, 2001. Margaret was the daughter of Leo and Anna Schue O’Brien.
Ervin had a New York State high school equivalence diploma and earned his associates degree in electricity and electronics from Mohawk Valley Community College. He was employed at Lyons Falls Pulp and Paper Company and its predecessors for nearly 40 years. Starting as an apprentice electrician, he retired as a special product engineer. While working as a control technician, he co-authored an article with Texas Instruments for a national publication. Upon retirement, he worked part time at the Lodging Kit Company for over 20 years.
Ervin was a member of St. Joseph’s-Christ Our Hope Catholic Church. He served as the first lay commentator, the first lay lector, first Eucharistic minister, and first adult server for funerals. He also served as head usher for many years. Ervin was a third degree Knight of Columbus, where he served as Grand Knight for three years when the new counsel was built and paid for. He was a proud member of the Boonville Volunteer Fire Company for 50 years. For many years, he cared for his wife Margaret and her brothers.
Ervin enjoyed playing baseball, basketball, and soccer while in school. In his later years he played town team baseball and after slowing down a bit, he played church softball. His family meant the world to him. Every minute spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren was a great pleasure.
He is survived by his six daughters, Anne Fortin, Sandra (Terry) Newvine, Nancy Latvis, Laura (John) Croniser, Mary(Frank) Sladish, and Kathleen Sullivan; 13 grandchildren; and 16 great-grand children. He was predeceased by his wife Margaret; a grandson, Daryl Sullivan; five brothers; and one sister.
In keeping with his wishes, there will be a memorial mass at St. Joseph’s Church in the spring at a time to be announced. There are no calling hours. Burial will follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
