LYONS FALLS-Lawrence J. Mathis, endearingly known as Babe and Ivan, 71, of Lyonsdale Road, passed away surrounded by family on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at Wynn Hospital, Utica.
In keeping with Lawrence’s wishes, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. A Celebration of Life gathering will be held at the convenience of the family. Arrangements are with Iseneker Funeral Home, Inc., Lowville.
Lawrence is survived by his beloved wife of 36 years Jan; three children, Liz (Scott) Newvine and their children, Payton and Avery; Tiffany (Brandon) Peery and their children, Loren and Lucia, Hunter Mathis; his siblings, Donna Mathis, Mike (Kathy) Mathis, brother and lifelong neighbor Peter (Sherry) Mathis, David Mathis; several nieces, nephews, and cousins. He is predeceased by a sister-in-law, Maggie Mathis and a very best friend David Axtell.
Lawrence was born on June 10, 1952 in Constableville, NY, a son of the late Donald and Mary Hoffman Mathis. He graduated from South Lewis Central School in 1970 and attended Mohawk Valley Community College. Lawrence worked various jobs in carpentry and construction for many years until he was injured and retired due to that injury. In his retirement, he continued his love of art and drawing and spent more time on his Beatles artwork. He enjoyed hunting, Star Trek, playing cards and horseshoes with his friends, watching Old Western television-especially Bonanza and Gunsmoke, and four time Super Bowl Winning team the New York Giants, most of all, he was happiest being at home with his family.
