New York State Police Acting Superintendent Dominick L. Chiumento is saddened to announce the line of duty death of a retired State Trooper, who is local to the Mohawk Valley and wrapped up his career serving the Troop D region.

Trooper Robert M. Burney, 57, entered the State Police on March 20, 1989, and served with the State Police for 27-years.

On December 9, 2023, Trooper Burney passed away from an illness stemming from his assignment at the World Trade Center site, following the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.

Following the events of 9/11, Trooper Burney was assigned to New York City to aid in the search and recovery efforts.

He was last assigned to Troop D before his retirement in January, 2017.

Trooper Burney was from New Hartford, NY, and is survived by his mother.
