JEFFERSON COUNTY- Could the North Country see the instillation of another dairy processing plant?

With all of the recent agriculture buzz from Chobani’s announcement this spring to build another manufacturing facility in Rome, NY, a Texas based dairy company is now reportedly eyeing a swath of land near Watertown, NY.

According to the latest updates from WWNY-TV, Southern Dairy is weighing in on possibly constructing a 300,000 square-foot dairy processing facility on property owned by Robbins Family Farm.

Reports suggest that the plant would ultimately use raw milk, skim milk and whey sourced directly from regional dairy farmers to produce milk powders.

Other potential sites are on the table as well, including parts of the mid-Atlantic and the Midwest, but sources told reporters that a North Country location appears to be the preferred spot.

If this project is ultimately approved, it would reportedly take around two-years for construction and the plant would end up employing 80-people.
