Boonville Village Police responds to growing social media outcry against stiffer enforcement efforts

BOONVILLE- Local officials are anticipating what could be a very heavily attended upcoming village board meeting on the evening of Tuesday, November 25, 2025.
Over the last several weeks, there has been a crescendoing outcry on social media involving the village police department, including mostly on Facebook.
Specifically, it appears several folks, involving a mixture of village residents and others who pass through frequently, have taken the initiative to share their grievances and complaints to social media in regards to what seems to be a stiffer enforcement effort under the village’s new Chief of Police.
Most of these remarks and comments that are being made on social media have reflected an enforcement increase, including for traffic violations and tinted windows, especially.
In New York State, there are laws on the book that restrict the amount of tint that is considered legal, however; Chief Dave Olney says enforcement, in general, has been lax.
In a Facebook post made during the evening hours on Monday, local resident, Shannon Schuler, brought attention to this upcoming public village board meeting.
Since publishing her post, she has reiterated how her call for concerned residents and business owners to attend and voice their concerns is not to stir up heated controversy, but rather an avenue in hopes for solutions and understanding.
“What’s most important to me is this is not an anti police force message. This to address essentially a lack of discernment,” Schuler claimed.
“To add to it, that lack of discernment and sort of iron fist approach is now detracting people from Boonville,” she went on, which adds to remarks being made on social media suggesting that some people are apparently no longer visiting the village out of fear of being pulled over and ticketed.
In response, Chief Olney, who took over being in charge of Boonville’s police force almost one-year-ago, says he yet to have one person address him face-to-face regarding these matters.
With the meeting approaching, the chief is inviting anyone who would like to express their concerns or issues to do so. “I will very gladly speak with anyone that has any concerns about the police department or any of its officers,” he explained.
“My desk number is 315-338-2882. If I'm not there, it goes to voicemail. I will get back to anyone that would like to speak with me. I also welcome anyone to stop by the PD or village offices to speak with me in person.”
The village board meeting on November 25 is aimed to begin at 7:00 p.m.
