Nearly 2 million trout will be stocked this spring in waters across New York State, the DEC claims.
Some stockings have already been conducted and will continue periodically through early June.
For context, trout season traditionally began in New York State on April 1, but thanks to some modifications enacted in 2021, most streams in New York now have a strict catch-and-release (artificial lures only) from October 16 through March 31, with harvest seasons kicking off now April 1.
The tweaks were made to basically allow a year-round opportunity for anglers to target trout in most of New York’s streams, lakes and ponds.
“The mild winter afforded New Yorkers some trout fishing opportunities during the catch-and-release season,” Commissioner Seggos said.
“However, April 1, the traditional opening day of inland trout fishing season, brings the excitement to another level as spring arrives and the state’s streams and ponds are stocked to provide additional opportunities for anglers.”
DEC trout stocking this year will include the placement of 1,909,450 catchable size brook, brown, and rainbow trout in streams and ponds across the state by early June.
“Stocked-Extended” streams, listed in the Inland Trout Streams Regulations section of the freshwater fishing regulations guide, will receive fish every other week for two months to enhance season-long opportunities for angler success.
Most streams will also receive a seeding of larger stocked trout.
