
ROME- An accident involving one vehicle Sunday late afternoon in the city of Rome, NY, which resulted in serious physical injuries, remains under police investigation.

It happened right around 5:30 p.m. on the Rome Westernville Road, near the Golf Course Road.
For now, Sheriff’s Investigators have determined that Philip Spinelli, 85, of Rome, NY was heading south in a 2017 Honda HRV. According to police, Spinelli somehow veered into the northbound lane before going off the shoulder and striking an embankment.
The vehicle flipped end-over-end numerous times before coming to rest.
Philip was flown to SUNY Upstate Medical Center. Meanwhile, Philip’s passenger, Jean Spinelli, 79, of Rome, NY was taken to Rome Memorial Hospital for a medical evaluation.
Police said that both Philip and Jean suffered from what was described as serious physical injuries.
Another update may surface as the investigation remains ongoing, police said at press time.
Members from the State Police, Lake Delta and Rome Fire Departments, Mercy Flight, AmCare Ambulance and North Country Towing all assisted.
