DENMARK- A North Country resident is accused of intoxicated driving, following reports of a crash Friday evening in Lewis County, authorities say.

According to emergency responders, it happened shortly after 7:00 p.m. on State Route 12, town of Denmark. Authorities say a blue colored 2023 Toyota Camry went off the roadway and struck a mailbox.

Sheriff’s Office investigation suggests the driver has been identified as Joseph R. Sawyer, 35, of Watertown, NY.

Deputies say Sawyer failed field sobriety tests on scene. Sawyer was subsequently processed at the Public Safety Building and charged for aggravated DWI (BAC > .18%) and DWI. Police say Sawyer registered a .19% BAC.

In addition, Sawyer was also charged with resisting arrest, as deputies allege that Joseph fought during apprehension.
