Emergency responders investigate fatal Lewis County fire

CROGHAN- A garage fire early Monday in Lewis County has claimed the life of one victim, emergency officials are reporting.

Alarms sounded shortly after 3:00 a.m. for a structure fire at 7005 William Street, Croghan, NY.

Croghan was the primary fire department on scene, with mutual aid thanks to Beaver Falls, Castorland and New Bremen.

When the first wave of responders arrived, they witnessed a fully engulfed garage, with flames starting to spread to the home. Furthermore, initial responders learned of one individual who was unaccounted for.

Firefighters immediately began searching the home, while another crew of responders battled flames on the garage.

A search of the home yielded no results and by the time crews got the flames under control and could begin safely searching the garage, one individual was located and pronounced deceased on scene.

A name for the victim was not available at press time. The property is reportedly owned by Lawrence Lyndaker, according to Croghan Fire Department.

The garage and its contents were destroyed, but firefighters did prevent the blaze from spreading to the main residence.

Members from the State Fire Office were brought in to investigate. An official cause was not listed as of this report.

No other injuries were reported.

Members from Lewis County Search & Rescue, the Sheriff’s Office and New York State Police assisted.
