CROGHAN- Numerous emergency responders battled the flames of a wildland fire in Lewis County earlier this month.
It happened on October 5 in the town of Croghan and according to the latest New York DEC Forest Ranger Highlights, the fire was initially 23-ares in size and was primarily burning leaf litter.
Local agencies assisting Forest Rangers during this battle included the Sheriff’s Office, Emergency Management, Castorland, Croghan and New Bremen Fire Departments.
Despite knocking out the perimeter flames at first, emergency responders said the blaze was only about 20% contained, but by the next day on October 6, firefighters managed to wrangle the flames and claim 100% control of the situation.
As of press time this week, the DEC said that Forest Rangers have been keeping an eye on the area for hot spots.
A cause for this fire was not mentioned at press time.
