Former Rep. Liz Cheney re-shares Stefanik’s original statement on January 6 U.S. Capitol attack, which appears to have been removed from press release archive

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Former U.S. Representative Liz Cheney (R-WY) has stirred up some political controversy after sharing a statement, originally released by the office of North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY-21) and pertaining to the January 6 U.S. Capitol riots, which now appears to have been deleted from her press archive.

For context, Stefanik officially began representing the North Country after being elected in 2014, so her official press archive began in early 2015, whereas of earlier this month, any visitor to her website was able to comb through her press archive as far back when she took office.

However, as of this report, her archives now only extend as far back as 2023.

We plan on reaching out to Stefanik’s office for any response or clarification she may have.

Towards the beginning of last-week, Cheney, a former GOP colleague of Stefanik, dug through Elise’s press archive, before it was only available through 2023, and found a statement she released the day of the U.S. Capitol attacks, condemning rioters and the violence that took place.

“Americans have a Constitutional right to protest and freedom of speech, but violence in any form is absolutely unacceptable and anti-American,” Stefanik originally said.

However, her tune and attitude towards those responsible in participating in the violence seems to have evolved since. Just this month, Stefanik referred to rioters, including those facing criminal charges, as “hostages.”

“I have concerns about the treatment of January 6 hostages,” Stefanik said while joining NBC’s Meet the Press, a remark which drew a firestorm of backlash from fellow Representatives.

Full remark below:

On the Weaponization of the Federal Government:

“I have concerns about the treatment of January 6 hostages. I have concerns. We have a role in Congress of oversight over our treatment of prisoners and I believe that we're seeing the weaponization of the federal government against, not just President Trump, but we're seeing it against conservatives. We're seeing it against Catholics, and that's one of the reasons why I'm so proud to serve on the Select Committee on the Weaponization of the Government because the American people want answers. They want transparency. And they understand that as you look across this country, there seems to be two sets of rules: if your last name is Clinton or it's Biden, you get to live by a different set of rules than if you're an everyday, patriotic American. I've been clear, Kristen. If you go back and play the full speech I gave on the House Floor, I condemned the violence just like I condemned the violence of the BLM riots, but I also importantly stood for election integrity and security of our elections which if we don't have that, we do not have a democracy. So the real threat to our democracy is these baseless, witch hunt investigations and lawsuits against President Trump, whether it's Tish James or whether we see in the DC Circuit Court, and that is undemocratic, and it's shredding our Constitution. And you know who agrees with me, Kristen? The American people. That's why President Trump is winning in poll after poll against Joe Biden.”

Furthermore, Cheney recently referred to Stefanik this month as a “total crackpot.”

Earlier this month, current GOP frontrunner and former U.S. President Donald Trump, floated Stefanik’s name as a potential VP running mate, saying “She’s a killer.”
