Fourth year of George Capron Memorial Scholarship recipients announced
BOONVILLE- Brett Sanford, Senior, Adirondack Class of '23, and Madison Rookey, Senior, South Lewis Class of '23, are this year's recipients for the George Capron Memorial Scholarship.
Now in its fourth-year, the scholarship, which honors the legacy of Mr. WBRV, or better known as George, awards recipients a total of $500 each.
Originally, the fund was established for students from Adirondack Central School pursuing careers in the media field. However, the guidelines have broadened to allow recipients from other districts, since George touched the hearts of many far beyond the Boonville area.
Furthermore, the guidelines have adjusted to focus on similar characteristics George exemplified through his endless list of community involvement.
"I would say I am really honored to know that I am making some sort of difference and I hope to do that more often," Rookey said. "To know that you're making some sort of difference in the community and that people are noticing that, it helps," Sanford said.

For now, Sanford told us he plans to head south to Georgia sometime next winter and attend training school there to become a lineman, with the ultimate goal of achieving a superintendent position.
He has played numerous varsity sports, including basketball, baseball and football, while also interning with the Boonville Municipal Commission.
Meanwhile, Rookey says her ultimate goal for now is to become a camera woman in the film industry. She will attend Mohawk Valley Community College.
She has been active with the Yearbook Committee, Conspiracy Theory club, and S. A. V. E. Her interests include dance and volunteer service.
Sanford and Rookey were presented with this year's scholarship award Tuesday at the Boonville Herald. Dan Capron, one of two sons to George, attended to help present the honors.
“Dad never considered his career work, he loved what he did everyday and never envisioned himself retiring," Dan said.
"Whenever we went somewhere he was always greeted with a story or a laugh by someone who knew him from his work. When we went out to eat it would sometimes take him 15 minutes to even sit down, he talked to so many people.”

This October will mark four-years since George passed away, leaving behind a legacy that included over 50-years of being on the air for WBRV, a very rare feat in the broadcasting field.
During his career and lifetime, George was involved with a long list of community organizations, including taking photographs for the Woodsmen's Field Days, holding an official seat for Lost Trail Snowmobile Club and participating in the Boonville Elks Lodge, just to name a few.
