Hiker rescued from Inman Gulf after falling 200-feet

NYS Forest Rangers Lewis County Gorge Rescue September 2024

LEWIS COUNTY- A hiker who fell 200-feet while adventuring in the Tug Hill State Forest was rescued by emergency personnel.

It happened during the afternoon hours on Tuesday, September 17. Forest Ranger Captain Nowalk and four other Rangers were dispatched, along with several other emergency agencies, to the Inman Gulf, town of Pinckney for reports of a hiker who had fallen 200-feet. 

Rangers and members from Lewis County Search and Rescue had to hike over 2-miles to the subject.

It was determined that the hiker had dislocated their shoulder. Emergency personnel teams chose a rope system to rescue the 46-year-old from Adams Center, NY.

Martinsburg, New Bremen, and Rodman Fire Departments assisted with the rope system.

Rescuers, including the Lewis County Search and Rescue team, New York State Police, and the Lewis County Sheriff’s Department, raised the subject 200 feet before transport to an area hospital.

No other injuries were mentioned by the New York State DEC.
