LOWVILLE- Lewis County Public Health Office is recruiting for their upcoming diabetes prevention and healthy lifestyle course.

Public Health Specialist Sierra Kempney tells us the course last over a period of a few months, with classes meeting frequently at first and then spacing out towards the finish.

The goal is to help those who are pre-diabetic manage their blood sugar levels so they don't become diabetic. "And a lot of people don't realize that they're in trouble until it's too late," Kempney emphasized.

"When they go to the doctor and they're actually diagnosed with diabetes, there is no going back. You can't no longer have diabetes somewhere down the line, you will always have it the rest of your life. So that's why it's so serious."

Could you be pre-diabetic? Take the CDC risk test here.

The course is also designed for anyone looking to lose weight and learn more about living a healthier lifestyle.

Those seeking more details, including where the course takes place, how often and when it begins, should contact Lewis County Public Health: 315-376-5453.

According to the CDC, pre-diabetes is a serious health condition where blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but not high enough yet to be diagnosed as type 2 diabetes.

Approximately 96 million American adults, that's more than 1 in 3, have pre-diabetes. Of those with pre-diabetes, more than 80% don’t know they have it.
