ALBANY, NY- It was a month late, but it wasn't the latest budget on record, so far, for New York State.
At the whopping tune of $229 billion, the 2024 Fiscal Year State Budget passed a month late, with a series of extenders amid negotiations, which mainly revolved around bail reform and housing.
"This is certainly the latest one in decades, but certainly we never saw a budget this late under Andrew Cuomo," said Senator Mark Walczyk (R,C - NY 49).
"There's funding for a lot of great things, of course, but this $229 billion Democratic wish-list fails to address some of our biggest concerns over public safety, energy, affordability, and the skyrocketing cost of living."
Although the Senator says being a month late for a state budget is something to frown upon, this budget, believe it or not, does not rank among the latest in years past.
In fact, there was a stretch during the mid-1980's and through the 90's where New York hosted a record of passing late budgets for 13 consecutive years.
Some budget showdowns during that time frame even went as far into August.
The Senator joined North Country News on Wednesday and shared his remarks concerning the budget. Be sure to listen here:
