Lining up: Empty tank cars making a re-appearance in Southern Lewis County

Tank cars Lyons Falls 2023

LYONS FALLS- The railroad tracks between Boonville and Lyons Falls, NY tend to remain very quiet, but those empty tank cars have started to re-appear and will remain parked for storage over the next few months.

The first set of cars arrived a few weeks ago and several more strings have collected since as far south to the very bottom edge of Port Leyden (as of this report).

In years past, these cars have accumulated from Lyons Falls and all the way down to Boonville.

We have reached out to Genesee Valley Transportation Co., Inc., the company in charge of the railroad tracks, for official comment. Although we are still waiting to hear back, the company has said in years past that these cars are parked for storage purposes only.

They are empty while parked, GVT clarified in past reports.

We don’t have an official estimate on how many cars will ultimately end up parked, but a source familiar with the railroad says there are numerous sets expected to arrive over the next several weeks.

We will update if and when GVT responds to our comment inquiry.
