LOWVILLE- Firefighters responded to a house fire Monday morning.

It happened shortly before 11:00 a.m. at 7596 Church Street. Responding units found a working fire in a second story bedroom.

Lowville Fire Chief Joe Austin says the fire was successfully knocked down, while firefighters conducted overhaul measures to ensure the flames did not spread elsewhere.

When all was said and done, the property was turned back over to the owners, Robert and Shirley Merry.

Chief Austin says the home should still be salvageable, as damage was mainly kept to the bedroom area and the structure of the house itself was not impacted.

The property is insured and there were no injuries reported.

Firefighters managed to save a cat from the flames and Chief Austin made note that the homeowner closed the bedroom door, which most likely was a main factor in preventing the blaze from spreading further.

As of press time, firefighters believe this blaze was sparked by an unattended candle, which was too close to combustibles.
