ONEIDA COUNTY- A motor vehicle accident Saturday in Northern Oneida County resulted in major damage for two vehicles, but no life threatening injuries for the drivers and their passengers.

It happened at around 4:00 p.m. at the intersection of State Route 26 and East Ava Road, town of Ava, the Sheriff's Office said.

Investigation suggests the accident occurred when Frank Mellace, 91, of Rome, NY tried crossing State Route 26, heading eastbound, and pulled out in front of Rochelle A. Pfeiffer, 62, of Boonville, who was heading north.

Major damage was reported to both vehicles, but no life threatening injuries were indicated at press time.

Pfeiffer was taken to Rome Memorial Hospital for additional evaluation, while Mellace was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica, NY for the same.

Deputies said Mellace failed to yield right-of-way. He was issued a traffic citation.

Sheriff's Deputies received assistance from West Leyden Fire Department and Ambulance, AmCare Ambulance and Boonville Ambulance.
