Monday night garage fire in Lowville believed to be electrical in nature, emergency officials say

LOWVILLE- Local emergency responders say Monday night’s garage fire in the village is believed to be electrical in nature.

Lowville Fire Department was called out sometime shortly before 10:00 p.m. and responded to 7552 Church Street after a neighbor called 9-1-1 for seeing flames inside the garage.

According to Chief Joe Austin, firefighters went to work with extreme caution, due to the risk of added fuel loads present at the scene.

The initial flames were tamed within the first few minutes, but upon realizing flames had sneaked their way up to the second-floor, Martinsburg was called in for mutual aid.

The flames upstairs were successfully doused within a half-hour and crews continued overhaul operations for the next hour-and-a-half to ensure there were no hot spots.

When all was said and done, firefighters reported minor structural damage (which is likely repairable). In addition, some garage contents were damaged from smoke, heat and water.

Though an exact cause is undetermined as of this report, officials said it is believed to be electrical in nature and it is confirmed this fire sparked on a work bench.

The property is owned by Norma Zehr. No injuries were reported.

Members from the Village of Lowville, the Village Police Department, National Grid and Lewis County Search & Rescue all assisted.
