ALBANY- A bill has passed both chambers of the New York State Legislature that would allow terminally ill patients to end their own lives, with the assistance of pharmaceutical drugs.
The proposal now heads to Governor Hochul’s desk to officially be signed into law, according to the Associated Press.
Supporting law makers for this bill designed the language to allow a New Yorker, with a terminal illness, to be prescribed with life-ending drugs upon request.
To clarify, such prescriptions would need a stamp of approval by two physicians.
Those who would utilize this option would need to submit a written request, which must be signed by two witnesses to ensure the patient is not being coerced.
Those who have spoken out against the bill say this intrudes religious grounds.
It took nearly 10-years to get this measure through, as it was first introduced in 2016.
