OHIO- The Poland Fire Company remains out of its regular service as the Poland Joint Fire District voted this month to cut their contracting ties with the fire department.

Though Barneveld and Newport Fire Departments have both reportedly been called upon to pick up the slack, several residents have expressed their concerns, especially those living in the town of Ohio, which is generally remote and far from any dense civilization.

The Town of Ohio held a public hearing this week, where residents were able to join and express their fears of not having any sort of official fire coverage.

As a response, town board members made a motion to temporarily contract with Poland Fire Company and if approved, the contract would expire on December 31, 2025.

The contract will become valid upon review from town attorneys.

On Thursday, August 28, 2025, secretary of Poland Fire Company, Kelly Wenzel, joined North Country News and shared her take on the matter. Be sure to listen here:
