According to officials, the scam involves a text message being sent out to people that offers $1,500 rebates as a result from steep gas prices. Officials say those who click on the link are brought to what appears to be the DMV website, but do not be fooled – because it’s a mock page.

People are then requested to submit their own personal information (I.E: Name, address, social security number and etc.).

This scam is known as a ‘phishing text’ – which are fraudulent messages with aims to obtain data. In return, the scammers capitalize on their move by ultimately stealing your information, or even installing malicious software onto your computer or mobile device.

DMV officials warn residents to avoid sharing your personal information.

If it sounds too good to be true, officials say often times it is.
