New York State DEC: Hinckley Reservoir Day Use Beach closed for swimming due to low water levels

HERKIMER COUNTY- For people who frequent the Hinckley Reservoir Day Use Area in the town of Russia, the New York State DEC warns that the beach will be CLOSED to swimming effective Friday, August 22.

DEC officials cite unsafe swimming conditions caused by low water levels.

However, the beach area will remain open for non-swimming activities such as picnicking and paddling while the closure is in effect.

The DEC says this proactive decision is necessary to ensure public safety, as the low water levels may expose hazards, limit safe wading depth, and compromise lifeguard visibility and response capabilities.

If conditions improve, the DEC will issue another notice.
