NWS UPDATE: Lake Effect Snow Warnings for Tug Hill and Western Adirondacks through Friday; Winter Weather Advisory for Northern Oneida County through Friday

JEFFERSON, LEWIS & OSWEGO COUNTIES: LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 7 P.M. WEDNESDAY TO 7 P.M. EST FRIDAY.

* WHAT...Heavy lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations 2 to 3-feet in the most persistent lake snows. Winds gusting as high as 40-mph will produce considerable blowing and drifting snow.

* WHERE...The Eastern Lake Ontario Region. The most significant accumulations are forecast across far northern Oswego County, the southern half of Jefferson County, and the northern half of Lewis County.

* WHEN...From 7 P.M. Wednesday to 7 P.M. EST Friday.

* IMPACTS...Travel will be very difficult with deep snow cover on roads and very poor visibility. Areas of blowing snow will significantly reduce visibility. The hazardous conditions will impact the Wednesday evening, Thursday morning, and Thursday evening commutes.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...Heavy snow will fall in relatively narrow bands. If traveling, be prepared for rapidly changing road conditions and visibilities. During lake effect snow, the weather can vary from bands of locally heavy snow with greatly reduced visibilities to dry conditions just a few miles away. Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility, and road conditions.

 

OLD FORGE & WESTERN ADIRONDACKS: LAKE EFFECT SNOW WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 1 A.M. THURSDAY TO 7 A.M. EST FRIDAY.

* WHAT...Heavy lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations of 7-inches with locally higher amounts where the heaviest bands of snow occurs. Winds gusting as high as 35-mph which can lead to blowing and drifting snow.

* WHERE...Hamilton and Northern Herkimer Counties.

* WHEN...From 1 A.M. Thursday to 7 A.M. EST Friday.

* IMPACTS...Roads, and especially bridges and overpasses, will likely become slick and hazardous. Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning and evening commutes.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The heaviest snow is expected to occur along and especially north of Route 28.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...During lake effect snow, the weather can vary from bands of locally heavy snow to dry weather just a few miles away. Visibilities can also vary greatly. Be prepared for rapid changes in weather, visibility, and road conditions. If you must travel, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in your vehicle in case of an emergency. NORTHERN ONEIDA COUNTY: WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 7 P.M. THIS EVENING TO 1 P.M. EST FRIDAY.

* WHAT...Lake effect snow expected. Total snow accumulations between 2 and 5-inches, with locally up to 6 inches across the far northwestern tip of Oneida County.

* WHERE...Northern Oneida County.

* WHEN...From 7 P.M. this evening to 1 P.M. EST Friday.

* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Thursday morning and evening commutes.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Rain will change to lake effect snow this evening. While the heaviest snow will likely remain north of the region across the Tug Hill, accumulating lake effect snow is expected to reach northern Oneida County at times.
