One injured and one deceased in fatal Lewis County ATV accident

MARTINSBURG- One person was injured and another succumbed to their injuries in the wake of an ATV accident Saturday in Lewis County, authorities say.

Emergency responders were called out to the Swernicki Road, town of Martinsburg after 9-1-1 dispatch received reports of an ATV that struck a utility pole. 

According to investigation via the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, Gene Clark, 55, of Rome, NY was driving a 2022 CF Moto 800 machine northbound and struck a utility pole after going off the roadway. 

Police say the impact ejected Clark from the ATV. He suffered an unknown leg injury. 

Meanwhile, police say Kim Clark, 48, of Rome, NY suffered significant injuries in the accident. 

She was rushed to Lowville Hospital, where she was confirmed deceased. 

As of this report, deputies believe that speed and alcohol involvement were NOT factors. 

However, the investigation is still pending. 

Martinsburg Fire Department, Lewis County Search & Rescue, Lewis County Parks & Recreation and Turcks Towing all assisted.
