ALBANY, NY- An amendment to repeal HALT has failed in New York’s legislature.

Numerous reports have surfaced that suggest State Senator Dan Stec (R) put forth a proposal that would have completely done away with New York’s HALT Act, which enacted with intents of reforming the way solitary confinement can be used as a form of punishments in the state prison system.

However, current prison guards say the legislation has made an already risky job even more dangerous because it strips their ability to adequately handle inmates who become unruly or lash out.

Despite Senator Stec’s failed amendment, he says that he will continue his mission advocating for corrections officers in his district and statewide.

Guards have been on strike now for the last several days – an effort to make their concerns visible to leaders in Albany.

These strikes have spread to the vast majority of prisons statewide, according to various sources. Governor Hochul has declared these strikes illegal.
