ALBANY, NY- A state judge has ruled New York’s prison system has been holding inmates in solitary confinement for too long.
This development surfaces from the Associated Press.
In a decision filed Thursday, State Supreme Court Justice Kevin Bryant explained how New York’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision apparently failed to offer adequate evidence to defuse allegations that it has fallen short in obeying established limits for state law solitary confinement.
The latest codes for solitary confinement were cemented in 2021.
This decision blossoms from a class action lawsuit, which was originally filed last-year by the New York Civil Liberties Union and Prisoners’ Legal Services of New York.
In an emailed statement to the AP, New York’s Corrections Department claimed it is reviewing the decision.
It’s reported that state law restricts solitary confinement to only three or six consecutive days in any given 30-day period.
