ORISKANY- The second overdose incident within a few days and the third within a matter of weeks has been confirmed at the Oneida County Correctional Facility.
As a result, the facility went into a lockdown and an officer was subsequently hospitalized after experiencing symptoms reflecting drug exposure.
Sheriff Rob Maciol says the first of these two overdoses occurred Tuesday, where the inmate was treated on-scene and taken to a local hospital. The second reportedly took place Thursday, where the inmate was treated, hospitalized and then returned.
Both inmates were administered with NARCAN. The Sheriff says it’s still not clear what they overdosed on, or how such substances managed to sneak into the jail.
The investigation remains ongoing.
Following Thursday’s overdose, the facility went into a lockdown while authorities executed an extensive search, yielding substances that are still unknown as of this update.
During the search, it’s reported that a member of the Sheriff’s Office Emergency Response Team began experiencing odd symptoms and was immediately given NARCAN. Since then, it’s been confirmed this officer was taken to the hospital for treatment of a drug exposure.
In addition to these latest overdoses, another one occurred leading into May, where the inmate died, despite lifesaving efforts.
This is a developing story. If and when the Sheriff’s Office provides another update, we will be sure to share.
The Sheriff's Office Corrections Division and S.E.R.T. were assisted by Wellpath Medical Staff, the Sheriff's Office Road Patrol, Criminal Investigation Unit, and the Sheriff's ID Unit.
