September 26 is a Free Fishing Day across New York!

The New York State DEC is reminding folks of an upcoming Free Fishing Day.

On Saturday, September 26, you won’t need a valid license to fish New York’s countless rivers, streams, lakes, ponds and other waterways.

This free fishing day coincides with National Hunting and Fishing Day, which was first designated by Congress in 1972 to encourage people to become acquainted with outdoor sports and recreation.

New York State hosts numerous free fishing days each year, where both residents and non-residents alike can fish without a valid license.

Don’t forget, anglers must still adhere to all current rules and regulations and licenses for anglers 16 and older are required on all other days that are not designated for free fishing.

Veteran’s Day will be the final free fishing day in New York for 2026.
