Several “No Kings” demonstrations held throughout Central and Northern New York
LOWVILLE- Several “No Kings” demonstrations were held throughout the entire country over the weekend on Flag Day, including here in the North Country.
These gatherings also just happened to occur as what appears to have been a counter measure against the parade that commemorated the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary, which took place on Constitution Avenue in Washington, D.C.
***NOTE: Though the parade revolved exclusively around the U.S. Army's 200th anniversary, it just so happened to be observed on President Trump's 79th birthday***
Take a look back at a historic timeline of other like parades in the U.S.
North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY-21) attended the military parade. “Loved standing and cheering for the U.S. Army Fort Drum and 10th Mountain Division from NY-21,” she wrote in a post shared to social media.
Meanwhile, these ‘No Kings’ protests managed to find their way to parts of our local region.
We observed numerous reports on social media suggesting these demonstrations were observed in the Utica and Rome, NY region.
We also saw a report that a demonstration was held in Old Forge, NY.
Meanwhile in Lowville, NY, Lewis County Democrats, a local political organization, took to the streets in Watertown, NY before holding additional protests in New Bremen and in Veteran’s Memorial Park (Lowville).
Beyond our local region, we received word that there were similar protests that took place in places like Canton, Syracuse and etc.
As far as we are aware, there were no violent clashes involving the demonstrations that took place locally.
Unfortunately, that cannot be said for other parts of the country, where some gatherings were overcome with violence.
Based on various conversations with demonstration goers, it appears these protests were organized in response to some of President Trump’s actions so far during his second term in office, including the numerous incidents involving ICE.
