State Police investigating fatal crash in Ava

AVA- One local resident has died in the wake of a single vehicle accident, which occurred over the weekend in Northern Oneida County.

It happened shortly before 5:00 a.m. Sunday on State Route 26, town of Ava, according to the New York State Police.

Investigators say that Betty L. Backer, 73, of West Leyden, NY was heading south in a 2014 Nissan Rouge. Authorities say Backer somehow crossed over into the other lane before exiting the shoulder, striking a cement barrier and then a tree.

Emergency responders transported Backer to Rome Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced deceased.

Members from West Leyden Fire Department, West Leyden EMS and the New York State DOT assisted.
