WASHINGTON, D.C.- Steering away from a potential default on the nation’s debt, U.S. House of Representatives passed late Wednesday a debt ceiling and budget cuts bill, known as ‘The Fiscal Responsibility Act.’
The measure was approved 314-117, with the Senate expected to pass it by week’s end.
Democrats accused certain Republicans for their “extremist” GOP views risking a default on the nation’s debt as soon as next week.
Although it appears there are mixed feelings and reviews spilling out from both sides of the isle, lawmakers emphasize the deal is better than the default alternative. “The Fiscal Responsibility Act is a win for the American people and future generations,” said North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY-21).
“The Fiscal Responsibility Act will be the largest deficit reduction in history. It will restore fiscal sanity, and it will hold Washington accountable,” she added.
While addressing the American people, McCarthy said in a speech that he and the Republican Party were working to “give America hope.”
He emphasized budget cuts were needed to help curb “runaway spending” in the nation’s capital.
