WASHINGTON, D.C.- The U.S. House of Representatives voted Wednesday on a measure that would essentially bar the federal government from funding initiatives to house illegal migrants in certain facilities, such as schools.
The measure, known as the ‘Schools Not Shelters Act,’ passed 222-201, with North Country Congresswoman Elise Stefanik (R-NY 21) voting in favor.
“Housing illegal immigrants in schools is unacceptable and irresponsible,” she said this week.
According to Stefanik’s Office, New York City Mayor Eric Adams announced plans to house asylum seekers in up to 30 current and former public schools.
Furthermore, she says Governor Kathy Hochul identified three SUNY campuses to shelter up to 1,500 migrants in dorms over the summer.
Specifically, this bill applies to the facilities of (1) public elementary or secondary schools, and (2) institutions of higher education.
This proposal does not apply to shelter or housing provided in response to certain disasters such as a fire, flood, explosion, or tornado for which there has been a disaster declaration.
In response, it’s reported that the Biden Administration “strongly opposes” the bill, which is not expected to come up for a vote anytime soon in the U.S. Senate, due to not having a sponsor in the upper chamber.
