ROME- There was quite a bit of tense activity Thursday near Rome as emergency responders investigated a suspicious item on Golf Course Road.

When all was said and done, the mystery object turned out to be a homemade firework, according to the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office.

The area – a dirt parking lot near Delta Lake Dam – was closed off to traffic as responders investigated.

Members of the bomb unit determined the firework was safe. Once it was secured, police sent it on its way – where the device will be evaluated by the FBI and New York State Police to determine its contents.

No other devices were found nearby.

As police worked the scene, authorities began receiving tips from area residents – who all claimed to hear an explosion last evening between 7:00 and 8:00 p.m.

Anyone who has information that may assist with the case is asked to reach out to the Sheriff’s Office: 315-765-2767.
