TROOPERS: No known threat to public as investigators look to solve pair of homicides and officer involved shooting in Lewis County

DIANA- We are expecting further details to surface over the coming days ahead, but authorities in Lewis County are investigating a pair of what has been described as homicides, plus gunfire exchanged between a suspect and responding police, which resulted in a fatality.

It was shortly before 5:00 p.m. on Friday when State Police (Carthage) investigated a trespass complaint at 7601 Alpine Road, town of Diana.

A homeowner, who was not present in the area, called authorities because they observed an individual on their property via a security camera. The individual appeared to be armed with a long gun, but left the area.

While responding, Troopers said they ended up locating two separately burned vehicles within the vicinity, with both containing confirmed remains of deceased individuals.

Law enforcement immediately set up a perimeter on the Alpine Road. All of a sudden, the suspect appeared from the home, armed with a long gun, and fired at law enforcement, investigators said.

Police officers returned fire and though Troopers rendered emergency aid immediately, the suspect was pronounced deceased.

The New York State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation and Major Crimes Unit are continuing the investigation in conjunction with the New York State Attorney General’s Office.

As of press time, suspect and victim identities were not yet released.

The New York State Police were assisted by the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, Natural Bridge Ambulance, Lewis County Search & Rescue, and Harrisville Fire Department.

There is no known threat to the public. The investigation remains ongoing.
