Schumer Watertown Tariffs November 2025

WATERTOWN- Local business owners throughout the North Country stood on Monday with U.S. Senate Minority Leader, Charles Schumer, to raise concerns about the ongoing trade war against Canada and the repercussions felt by local businesses.

“The North Country is paying the price for this reckless trade war that is driving away our closest ally and key trading partner, our neighbor to the North, Canada,” Schumer claimed while visiting the city of Watertown, NY.

According to Schumer’s office, President Trump halted trade negotiations with Canada and threatened to increase tariffs on Canada to 45% in response to a television ad.

Despite continuous pushback from figures like Schumer and others, the President has remained staunch with defending his tariff approach.

On November 9, President Trump even floated the idea of possible $2,000 checks for most Americans from tariff funds, to which Schumer is convinced will never actually happen, according to his office.

For now, details concerning how such tariff funding would be distributed to Americans remains unknown.
