UPDATE: Body found in Erie Canal has been identified by Medical Examiner’s Office; no initial sign of foul play

FLOYD- Authorities have released the name of the male victim who was found deceased in the Erie Canal on Sunday in the town of Floyd.

According to a report from the medical examiner’s office, the person has been identified as Brandon J. Montalbano, 40, of Rome, NY. He had been missing since April 2, the Rome City Police said in a news release on Monday.

Members from the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team recovered Montalbano’s body from the waterway.

Rome City Police Investigators say the cause and manner of death are unknown, while further autopsy and toxicology results are still pending as of this report.

With that said, officials made note that there are no immediate and obvious signs or suspicions of foul play.

The investigation is ongoing and detectives will continue to address all leads and information received.
