West Leyden- Warren H. Mathis, 92, of State Rt. 26, and husband of Eleanor, passed away peacefully at his residence on Monday, September 15, 2025.

Warren was born in Rome, on July 30, 1933, a son of Otto and Florentine Kapfer Mathis. He grew up on the Mathis homestead farm in the Town of Lewis, attended a rural school, before graduating from West Leyden Central School, with the Class of 1952. While in high school, Warren was a star athlete. Thereafter, Warren was employed as a logger in the West Leyden area and also for many years he operated a sales franchise for the Sthil (Pronounced Steel) Chain Saw Company. Warren and his family were fixtures at the New York State Woodsmen’s Field Days in Boonville, where he operated a chain saw sales concession. He will be fondly remembered as a very outgoing person and he and Eleanor enjoyed attending many social events.

In addition to his logging and chainsaw businesses, Mr. Mathis was instrumental, with the NYS DEC, in the reintroduction of the Fischer to the Adirondacks. He was involved in many Tug Hill dendrology studies as well as forest management on the Tug Hill Plateau. He was a valued board member of the Tug Hill Tomorrow Land Trust and among other boards, he was chairman of the Region 6 Forest Practice Board and several years ago he was the recipient of the Tug Hill Sage Award.

Warren is survived by the love of his life, his wife, Eleanor Walker Mathis, one son and daughter in law, Richard “Rick” and Mary Katherine Mathis, West Leyden, and three grandchildren, Luna, Fiona and Bowie; three sisters, Marjory Schaller, Linda (Duane) Wallace, Joyce (Robert) Parkhurst; two brothers, John Mathis and Rodney (Holly) Mathis, and many special nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Mass of Christian Burial, on Monday, September 22, 2025, at 11:00 A.M. at St. Mary’s Nativity Church, Rt. 26, West Leyden. There are no calling hours, however, Warren’s family will great those attending at the conclusion of the Mass. Interment will be private at the convenience of the family, in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Prussian Settlement. Memorial contributions may be made to The West Leyden Volunteer Fire Department, P.O. Box 205, West Leyden, NY 13489. Warren’s arrangements are in care of Trainor Funeral Home, 143 Schuyler St. Boonville.
