ON-AIR SEGMENT: South Lewis Central School Superintendent Douglas Premo talks electric school busses

TURIN- On Wednesday, March 18, 2026, South Lewis School Superintendent, Douglas Premo, joined North Country News and discussed electric school busses.

Earlier this winter, Mr. Premo was among a coalition of North Country school superintendents, who visited with lawmakers at both the federal and state level regarding some of the latest education issues rural schools are facing, including certain funding streams (check out part one and part two).

In addition to that, the coalition of superintendents also raised their concerns over New York's electric school bus mandate, which essentially requires all districts statewide to convert their bus fleets by 2035.

In order to achieve that, the state is requiring any new school busses purchased by New York school districts must be electric starting in 2027, though Mr. Premo claims there is a waiver for school districts to fill out and delay that until 2029.
