LOWVILLE- Are you at risk of becoming diabetic? According to the CDC, more than 37 million people in the United States have diabetes, and 1 in 5 of them don’t know they have it.
Furthermore, some 96 million U.S. adults are pre-diabetic and nearly 8 out of 10 of them don't realize it.
"So other than learning how you can eat healthier and increase your physical activity to lose weight, there's a lot of other topics we talk about in this class," said Lewis County Public Health Specialist Sierra Kempney.
She is in charge of recruiting the next group of people interested in taking the latest diabetes prevention and healthier lifestyle course. It's a free program that starts out meeting on a weekly basis, gradually phasing to once a month gatherings.
"You will also learn how to motivate yourself and stay motivated so you can make those lifestyle changes that will last the rest of your life, not just temporarily." Listen to more of Kempney's remarks here:
The purpose of the class is to help people who are pre-diabetic from becoming diabetic. As Kempney warned in our previous on-air segment, once you become diabetic, it is irreversible and can lead to a whole mess of other serious health problems.
The class takes place at Lewis County Education Center.
